At Ageless Ego Weight Loss & Wellness, our weight loss program teaches clients to be cognizant of what he or she eats. This is simply called “Mindful Eating.” Mindful eating means paying close attention to the foods that you eat. Mindful eating is simply being intentional about what one allows in his or her body. Buying, preparing, serving, and consuming are all parts of mindful eating. Let’s face it, it is tough to stick to only fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and other healthy foods. As humans, it is natural for us to crave cheeseburgers and hotdogs. We are American, right? However, mindful eating can be applied to cheeseburgers and hotdogs as well. When one applies mindful eating, he or she pays close attention to foods consumed while still indulging in unhealthy options but less often. In our weight loss program, we do not tell you what to eat as our focus is on reprogramming the mind to consume healthier options overall. We simply tell you how to eat.
Below are 8 steps to Mindful Eating
1. Begin with a shopping list – Fill most of your cart with items from the perimeter of the store such as in the produce section and avoid center aisles which contain tons of processed foods
2. Come to the table with an appetite but not when starving – If you skip meals, you may over indulge by putting any and everything in your belly
3. Start with small portions – limit the size of your plate to 9 inches or less
4. Appreciate your food – take a moment to silently express gratitude for the meal on your table
5. Bring all senses to the table – Be attentive to color, texture, aroma, and even sounds that different foods make as you prepare them
6. Take small bites – Consuming smaller bites allows you to taste your food completely; try putting your fork down in between bites
7. Chew thoroughly – Chew well until you can taste the goodness of your food. Research has shown that the slower one chews, the fuller one may feel.
8. Eat slowly – Take it all in as eating food should be an experience. This allows one to practice mindful eating.
